This edition, we wanted to show some of the latest works from our studio. Click the button above to go straight to the Artworks section and see what is new at the gallery. Ruby and Lucky Morton Kngwarreye, Clarise Tunkin, Fabrianne Peterson and Gwenda Turner (among others) have been painting with us over the last month. Lets take a look at some stunning examples of Central Australian Indigenous Art.
Also, a special thank you from all of us to all of you for your continued support over the last 18 months. Please read on for more.
Alice Springs has seen a sharp downturn in visitation due to current lockdowns Australia wide. Visitors from NSW and Victoria make up a large portion of tourism in this area. No flights to Uluru or Alice Springs from these areas has had a huge impact on our area and businesses like ours are feeling the strain.
The support of our visitors and followers really means the world to all of us here at Yubu Napa. The artists who rely on galleries like ours have had a hard 18 months or so. Summertime in Central Australia is down season, so when the world went into lockdown in March, it effectively put an end to tourist season and we went from Low Season to No Season.
We are all looking forward to moving back into normal times, but that could take years to happen. Which is why our newsletter, social media and website are such important tools. Thank you once again for reading this far and we look forward to the day we can welcome visitors back to this place with open arms!
IN THE STUDIO, AUGUST 2021
Clarise Tunkin has created a selection of beautiful work using a palette of rich, warm colours. Often using a darker palette of reds, she has put together some brighter reds with orange, pink and creamy whites to tell her Minma Marlilu story. This palette has lifted the artwork to a whole new level and the rich pinks and orange tones really do pop. These works are a happy and bubbly addition to our gallery and we look forward to working with Clarise as she starts looking at more new palettes. The image below is a wonderful example of this palette. Click her name above to see all works available.
With her Budgerigar Dreaming artworks, Gwenda has begun really expressing her creativity. These delicate depictions of the Budgerigar nesting near waterholes in the bush near Yuelumu have really become very popular with visitors to the gallery. The palette of colour used by Gwenda recently is a warm palette of red, orange and yellow, which she uses expertly when gradating the colour of the sand dunes across the canvas. This style has been slowly evolving over the last couple of months to this clever and creative technique that has mesmerised many who have been lucky enough to see the works in situ. The very latest works can be viewed by clicking the box above which will take you to the Gwenda Turner artist profile at our website.
When we first worked with Fab, we honestly had no idea just how creative she really was! Her damper seed works had mesmerised us and we were excited when she came into our studio for the first time to work.
In pretty short order, it became apparent that this lady had so much more in mind with her artistic practice. She asked if she could show us her Landscape designs and when we fist saw her painting these, we couldn’t believe that other galleries and studios had said they didn’t want Fab to paint this for them. Her landscape designs are created by drizzling different coloured watery paint across a stretched canvas. The colours mix and meld together on the canvas and when it dries, dots are applied across and around them. Image below is just an example of this style and we are excited to say that Fab wishes to paint more of these in the near future.
Meanwhile, click on the box above this section to view the work available by Fabrianne at our website. Her latest Damper Seed designs are truly amazing and we honestly cannot keep up with demand for them. See the image below and you’ll know why these have been so popular.
Ruby Morton Kngwarreye (left) and Lucky Morton Kngwarreye (right) are sisters from Utopia Region, to the North east of Alice Springs. Their works are a delight, much like these ladies themselves. Painting Bush Flowers, these artworks begin with a background of colour and are finished with white paint drawn over the top of this. The final layer subdues the brightly coloured background and the end result is a subtle and delicate painting. Click the artists names above the picture to view the available works.
Bush Medicine Leaf is a well known style of artwork from Central Australia which has been painted in many different ways by a range of different artists. Bernadine Johnson has a knack for selecting stunning colours to use in her brush work when telling this story and finishing the canvas with tiny little white dots, filling out the canvas beautifully.
She currently resides in Adelaide with her family, but whenever she visits Central Australia, we always look forward to seeing her and checking out her latest selection of works. Please note, the artwork shown in Bernadine’s profile photo has just been made available on our website. This piece has had quite a bit of attention and the palette of dark green teal, yellow and blue is amazing in real life!
Next month, we will showcase new work by Elsie Granites Napanangka, Sabrina Robertson Nangala, Nellie Marks Nakamarra and much more. All artworks are painted on site at our gallery and available to purchase. Feel free to email if you have any questions to for more information on artists and artworks - gallery@yubunapa.com
