With the horrible decade that has been the 2020’s, our region managed to fare pretty well during the global pandemic and the subsequent recovery period in the last couple of years. Recent negative publicity around our region has had a minor effect on tourism in the early months of the year, yet we have been pleasantly surprised at how many visitors are making Central Australia a destination to visit, and making their way to our gallery while they are here. These visitors are saying that they are not concerned with the negative press and have had a wonderful time in the Red Centre.
Our studio continues to operate, and we have seen some amazing artworks being produced by the talented Aboriginal Artists who work with us at the gallery.
NICK PUKLOWSKI
We are looking forward to bringing new artwork from Nick Puklowski this year. This talented New Zealand artist has begun work on a series of landscapes to be exhibited at Yubu Napa toward the end of the year. Today, we were lucky enough to receive the first work in this series, titled Year of the Snake. Using graphite, Nick draws a background onto 300gsm watercolour paper and fills this with gouache to create an abstract depiction of the Central Australian landscape. This piece looks fabulous on the wall of our gallery, and we are very excited to be hosting a showing of a selection of these bright, colourful Central Australian landscapes this year. Stay tuned for more!
NEW WORKS AT YUBU NAPA
Rosemary Porter Napanangka - Echidna Dreaming
101cm x 46cm - $1250
Using a palette of traditional ochre tones, Rosemary Porter has depicted this delicate Echidna Dreaming and the ceremony that the women hold for this Dreaming. The work is available at our website, click the button below to view this piece.
Samantha Daniels Napaltjarri - Grandmother’s Country
91cm x 61cm - $1100
As an artist, Samantha has developed her style drastically over the past few years. From depicting her Grandmother’s Country using a palette of black and white or Ochre Tones, she really loves to paint with a bold, bright palette of colour!
Recently, she visited our studio and selected the palette used on this artwork and has managed to show the landscape using an abstract network of dots and colour.
Fabrianne Peterson Nampitjinpa - Honey Ant
61cm x 61cm - $1750
On a white canvas, Fab has made an acrylic pour background of cool grey. She then draws her Honey Ant artwork over the top using different shades of grey to depict a woman digging for the ants. Last newsletter, we showed some smaller examples of this work and are always amazed to see this talented artist experimenting with different depictions of her stories.
Dulcie Long Pula - My Country
91cm x 61cm - $1750
Dulcie is perhaps best known for her Yam Leaf artworks, however, her My Country paintings have captured the hearts of art lovers due to the delicate depictions of the dry riverbeds, bush foods, bush flowers and the inhabitants of the land around Dulcie’s home country, Alhalkere, which is located in the heart of the Utopia region, to the North-East of Alice Springs.
EVENTS AT YUBU NAPA
Over the last few months, we have held some amazing events at the gallery. Everything from small cocktail parties to degustation dinners, we can transform the gallery into a special space to host these events.
fabALICE Festival had their launch party in March, which hosted 60 plus people to celebrate the 2023 festival (2024 fabALICE promises to be the best one yet, stay tuned for more on that later in the year).
Fab was a superstar when we hosted a small group of events managers from all over Australia as part of an Alice Springs Showcase famil with NT Business Events and Tourism NT. This was a very special evening, with Fabrianne Peterson telling her stories and showing her artwork, a short art talk from Karl and music by local artist XAVIA (click to follow her on facebook)
